GA-ACE and GAEA would like to express our deep concern regarding the scheduled make-up day on Monday, January 6, and its implications for student safety and equitable access to education.
First and foremost, we believe that the district’s decision to implement this make-up day without proper preparation compromises the safety and supervision of our students. The district has failed to adequately address the increased staffing needs required to ensure all students receive appropriate support and supervision. This lack of planning poses a significant risk to the well-being of both students and staff.
Additionally, we are shocked by the district’s decision to exclude certain special education students from attending school on January 6 due to staff shortages. This action blatantly disregards the rights of these students to an inclusive and equitable education. Excluding special education students not only creates disparities but also undermines the district’s legal and ethical responsibilities to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to all students.
We stand firm in our opposition to these decisions, which reflect a lack of commitment to collaboration and thoughtful problem-solving. We have repeatedly urged the district to engage in meaningful impact bargaining to address the effects of these added make-up days. Instead, the district has unilaterally implemented changes, disregarding the legal requirement to negotiate and the real-world implications for our students and staff.
As we move forward, our priority remains the safety, dignity, and equitable treatment of all students and staff. We are encouraged that the district has reopened discussions with GA - ACE, and we will continue advocating for solutions that prioritize student needs, staff well-being, and adherence to legal obligations.
We call on the GAPS Management to:
Ensure that all students, including those in special education, have access to a safe and supportive learning environment.
Provide adequate staffing and resources to meet supervision and safety requirements for all students.
Engage in good faith negotiations to resolve the issues surrounding these added days.
We urge our community to join us in advocating for an inclusive and well-supported educational environment. Thank you for your continued support as we work to ensure that every student and staff member is treated with the respect and care they deserve.
Sincerely,
GAEA and GA-ACE
